Oh dear! I love me some African food. African food is yummy
and it is satisfying. But there is a problem. The problem about eating African
food in America is that we are consuming so much carbs and starch but have
little to no activity to burn them off. I will speak for myself. African food
is a problem for me. After having my kids, I have been struggling to loss the
fat gained during pregnancy. But how possible is it when every day I munch on
carbs like a lion who devours his victims without mercy. I think the problem
with African food is that, because we grew up eating it, we are addicted to it
by default. The yumminess makes it so difficulty to even accommodate food from
other tribes. Perhaps, if we are still in Africa, we can continue to enjoy our
delicious food without a problem. I say this because in African, there are
different ways to burn off calories. The major way is trekking. In Africa, just
call everybody a “leggedes.” Is that even a word? Lo! At least you understand
what I mean. Ok! Not everybody, but majority of Africans are trekkers. We walk
to everywhere. If it were possible for an African man, he will trek from Africa
to America 😅. Just kidding.
Another solution for Africans back home that enable them to
stay in shape when it comes to their food is money. Unlike in America where you
can easily dash into the store and buy whatever you want. In Africa, it is
almost impossible to comfortably eat what you want. Truth be told. I speak for
they not so wealthy ones. In fact, snacking in Africa is consider luxury. Well!
I am not here to talk about Africans and their diet back home. Rather, I want
to emphasis on the importance of exercising while on African diet in America. I
don’t really know about this, however, a friend of mine told me that many
Africans are now developing diabetics in America. She told me how the carbs,
starch and excess oil we have in our food is causing most Africans to have
diabetics. Hmmm! As an African myself, that was scary. As scary as it may sound
I needed to hear that ugly truth. After our discussion, I promised her I will
look into it. It breaks my heart but something got to give.
I want Africans including myself to minimize our jellof
rice, Fufu and Ugali consumption. It’s for our own good. The system here makes
it impossible for us to trek. 😃. We are all used to driving. Besides, I don’t
think any African in America wants to go back to that trekking life again. Not
me! Mind you, I didn’t say you should stop eating your African food. If that
was possible, trust me I would have. I only advise that we eat more vegetables
and fruits as opposed to daily consumption of rice and fufu. I can’t stress
enough how important it is to exercise. Without exercise I would have be
disgusted at myself.
Thanks.
I am humble.
