If you are not familiar with the role of a male child in African
tradition, well, I am glad you are reading this post. In African, a male child
is basically the alpha male of all African household. Why did I say this? You
asked. To answer your question, I will break down the chain of command an
African male child has just my being what? “A man.”
In Africa, unlike in America where women are favored, a male
child in Africa is highly favored. Let’s rewind back, back in those days in an African
family, the male child in the house is the only one that is allowed to go to school. Why is that, well our
fathers back then believed that women’s education only ends in the kitchen.
Hence, why wasting their money for any silly education. Also, a male child is the only child
that is entitled to all the landed properties own by his father. Women are not
allowed to own a land. Their reason, women are to be married off anyways why
give them land when they will assumed their husband’s name. In addition to
that, female child is not allowed to partake in any discussion with elders. The
male child is. The male child like I mentioned above is the alpha child and
supreme above women. Therefore, should sit with elders in any communal
meetings. Can you believe that? 😕
Another privilege enjoyed by an African man just by being a
man is family business. Men are easily awarded the ownership of their family business
anytime their father retires or dies. However, modernization is gradually
reforming this category because women are slowing assuming some positions in
their family business. Good thing that the glass-ceiling here is in progress.
Last but not the least, if an African man dies, his male children automatically
gets everything in his will. An African man most often does not include their
daughters in their will. They believe that women has no say in their father’s
house especially if they are married. This is a short post so if I miss something, please feel free to
add your input.
Let me know if there are other privileges a male child in an African family enjoys just by being a 'man'.
Thanks.
I am humble.
